Berry Appleman & Leiden Immigration Assistant - BAL018 in Walnut Creek, California

The Immigration Assistant is responsible for providing general support to Paralegals and Attorneys with a variety of tasks and activities. This person will begin to learn and understand the immigration process by assisting in the preparation of documents and applications while learning how to communicate with clients. He/she must project a professional image for the firm through in-person and phone interaction.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Under the supervision of Attorney/Manager or Lead Paralegal)

• Prepare immigration cases as assigned by manager for submittal to the appropriate government agency

• Work closely with manager to manage cases and to meet monthly filing goals

• Understand the procedures and documentation required for cases to be filed successfully and following BAL’s service standards

• Work with clients to gather the necessary information and documentation in a timely manner

• Prepare forms according to information received from clients

• Prepare letters and other documents on behalf of the employer/client

• Finalize documents after review by Practice Manager, Team Manager and/or Attorney

• Ensure all deadlines are met

• Provide information and assistance to clients regarding legal procedures (NOT legal advice) •

Update database(s) and utilize case preparation/management tools effectively and efficiently

• Monitor status of all filed applications and petitions

• Run reports to assist in managing own caseload


• Make photocopies

• Send faxes and scan documents

• Retrieve and/or return files

• Other duties as assigned

• Address envelops and package


• Works with clients to obtain documents and information necessary to prepare applications

• Drafts support statements and organizes documentations for filling

• Files and monitors applications and petitions with appropriate government agencies

• Performs research to obtain information such as background on a company or industry, current wages, processing procedures, stand processing times, etc • Initiates contact with government officials to obtain necessary information to alert supervising attorney of potential delays or possible problems in the processing of an application

Physical Requirements:

• Able to maintain a sedentary position for up to 90% of the work day

• Able to type and to grasp, grip, push and pull file drawers and doors

• Able to walk and climb stairs or use elevator to coordinate with other departments

• Able to bend, stoop, kneel and/or stand to access files and documents

• Able to lift up to 25 lbs of files and/or boxes Attendance: • Prompt and daily attendance required


• Experience working in an office setting preferred

Minimum Education Level:

• Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent
