Job Summary

  • Directs day-to-day underwriting and servicing operations of Commercial Accounts with premiums $100,000 or greater.

  • Develops, directs and implements strategic initiatives that support profit, growth, service and risk management techniques.

  • Coordinates the execution of policies and programs that affect Custom Accounts Center of Excellence operations.

  • Monitors, and is ultimately responsible for top and bottom line results for the large account market segment.

    Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises assigned personnel.

  • Direct oversight and responsibility for the Custom Accounts Underwriting Center of Excellence.

  • Coordinates large account underwriting activities on an enterprise level to ensure that the appropriate level of underwriting, claims and loss control expertise as well as senior management awareness is brought to each these key accounts.

  • Works with Claims and Loss Control to identify customer needs, and develop innovative solutions to improve customer satisfaction, service and account retention. Monitors actual results in the areas of profitable commercial sales growth and market penetration.

  • Ultimately responsible for maintaining a combined ratio for all lines of business consistently 99% or better.

  • Provides master level skill, insights, and capabilities to support and counsel the Product Management functions for all Lines of Business regarding the underwriting criteria and rules portion of industry products.

  • Provides technical support to Product, Claims, Operations and Risk Management for underwriting issues.

  • Serves as Chief Technical Consultant on underwriting issues for CUO.

  • Serves as technical resource for quality analysis program audits on all Lines of Business, to ensure that underwriters at all levels are identifying and analyzing risk exposures and controls and making appropriate pricing and risk acceptance decisions.

  • Reviews and exercises approval of risks above the Commercial Center’s authority level.

  • Coordinates with Agents, Commercial Wholesalers, and Home Office personnel to identify opportunities as well as detractors to increased market share.

  • Uses data to make recommendations on pricing strategy, product enhancements and development of new products. Performs market analysis in conjunction with the Finance Department and Home Office Business Intelligence in order to determine successes and opportunities for the Custom Accounts unit by geographical area.

  • Directs staff in the research of products producing adverse results and develops action plans that lead to profitable growth.

  • Maintains contact with regulatory bodies, industry organizations and other insurance carriers to be regularly informed on developments affecting functional Underwriting responsibilities

    Physical Actions

    Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 10 lbs. maximum.

    Physical Environment

    Required job duties are normally performed in a climate controlled office environment with some exposure to uncontrolled conditions when visiting clients and traveling.

    Education Requirements

    Four-year college degree, completion of CPCU or equivalent job experience.

    Experience Requirements

    10 years of Commercial Lines insurance experience, including 2 years as a Regional/Branch Commercial Manager and / or Home Office Commercial Staff Manager.

    Special Skill Requirement

  • Technical expertise in commercial risk selection and pricing.

  • Knowledge of management information and business systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated presentation skills.

  • Analytical skills Ability to read and interpret policy contract language.

  • Broad-based working knowledge of relevant insurance laws and statutes, the contracts issue process, computer systems, competitor’s products and marketing practices
