Position Summary:

  • Provide current and up to date information and guidance to prospective and continuing students to support the university’s recruitment and retention efforts. Counselors provide support to undergraduate students, graduate students, their parents and advocates.

  • Counseling services are offered in person, by phone and by email.

Position Specific Responsibilities:

  • Financial aid Counselors must understand federal, state and institutional financial aid rules and regulations related to aid eligibility, awarding and disbursement. They must also stay current on current practices in financial aid.

  • Conduct financial aid presentations in the community and on campus regularly.

  • Collaborate with the Admissions Office, Student Accounts and the Registrar’s Office to ensure student successful registration and retention.

  • Continually update working knowledge of all aid programs.

  • Assist with documents, files, projects and phone calls as needed.

  • Each counselor with in this unit may manage a student aid program, in accordance with interest and skill set.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in financial aid application processing: need analysis, verification and awarding of federal, state, and university funds.

  • Ability to explain financial aid issues to students and parents in detail. Must also be able to calculate federal eligibility.

  • Quantitative and analytical skills, organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • The ability to prepare and provide presentations in a clear and effective manner.

  • Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years experience in financial aid at a post-secondary institution – preferably from the private sector.

Required Education:

  • Typically a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
